Australia Expands Sanctions on Iranian Officials Over Rights Allegations

(MENAFN) Australia has announced a new round of financial sanctions and travel restrictions targeting Iranian individuals and organizations, citing alleged human rights violations and involvement in security-related activities, according to reports.

The measures, confirmed by Foreign Minister Penny Wong, apply to seven individuals and four entities said to be connected to Iran’s security apparatus and financial systems.

In a statement, Wong accused Iranian authorities of widespread repression, including mass arrests and alleged abuses against protesters. She also claimed that detainees were subjected to harsh treatment and restricted from communicating with their families, while internet limitations were imposed during periods of unrest.

Australian officials said some of those sanctioned are linked to enforcing compulsory dress codes, monitoring political dissidents, and detaining foreign nationals. Others are accused of facilitating financial networks allegedly supporting armed groups and missile-related programs.

The sanctions were introduced in coordination with similar actions taken by the United Kingdom, reflecting a broader international effort targeting Iranian-linked entities.

According to Australian government figures, more than 230 sanctions have now been imposed on Iran-related individuals and organizations, including a significant number associated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Iran has not yet publicly responded to the latest sanctions or allegations, as reported by officials.
