Premier states Australia will acknowledge Palestinian state

(MENAFN) Australia plans to officially recognize a Palestinian state at the UN General Assembly in September, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced Monday.

“Until both Israeli and Palestinian statehood are permanent, peace can only be temporary,” Albanese said, emphasizing Australia’s support for Palestinians’ right to an independent state.

The move follows similar recognition plans by countries including France, Britain, and Canada, prompted by Israel’s military campaign in Gaza over the past two years in response to Hamas attacks.

Albanese noted that the Palestinian Authority has assured Australia that Hamas would have no role in any future Palestinian state. “There is a moment of opportunity here, and Australia will work with the international community to seize it,” he added.
